Accountable for the accounting operations of the company, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Under the CFO's direction, this role will be responsible for cash management and risk management.



  • The controller candidate should have a bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 7+ years of progressively responsible experience for a major company or division of a large corporation. 
  • Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations.
  • MBA in Finance is a plus.
  • Good supervisory and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have the availability to work a flexible schedule any day of the week.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in an organized and efficient manner.
  • Must have an excellent understanding of accounting practices and procedures.
  • Previous work experience with property management software and an understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel programs.
  • Candidate should be proficient in QuickBooks.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must be detailed oriented and have the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Previous experience in the hospitality and/or the multifamily industry is preferred.
  • Must display ethical conduct.


  • Issue timely and complete financial statements.
  • Coordinate the preparation of the entity specific semi-annual report.
  • Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations.
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics.
  • Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts.
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management.
  • Provide for a system of management cost reports.
  • Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Be involved in investor relations via processing monthly distributions, report generation and other communication as needed.
  • Oversee the activities of the disbursement department, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, purchase orders, petty cash, core team member expense reports, cash control, core payroll processing and total corporate payroll tax compliance.
  • Oversee the activities of the accounts receivable department to ensure the accurate and timely management of all accounts receivable aging components including billings, cash receipts application, etc.; funding service management, which includes weekly funding reports and customer service; quarter and year-end payroll closing including federal and state reports; and check statistic management.
  • Assure corporate income tax compliance to assure the accurate and timely completion of all corporate income tax returns taking full advantage of all favorable tax codes.
  • Establish and maintain systems and controls that verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data, and enhance the company's value.
  • Participate in a wide variety of special projects and compile a variety of special reports.
  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit (if/when necessary).
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants.
  • As SG or an SG affiliate becomes Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") registered, filing of quarterly and annual reports with the SEC.
  • Communicate with co-workers, management, clients and others in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.
  • Manage Insurance and Risk Programs including timely application and renewals of general liability, property, umbrella, work comp, crime, D&O, E&O and security bond policies.
  • Support Bi-weekly payroll function to include transaction posting, third party liaison and processing backup.



  • Manage the accounting department.

  • Prepare / review monthly, error free financial statements for all operating entities by the following deadlines:
    • Primary operating entities by the 15th of the following month
    • Secondary operating entities by the 20th of the following month
    • Non-operating entities by the 20th of the following month
  • Prepare a monthly budget and obtain verifiable explanations for material variances by the following deadlines:
    • Primary operating entities by the 10th of the month
    • Secondary operating entities by the 15th of the month
  • Prepare for and participate in the monthly finance meetings, which includes creation of a well-defined agenda and delivery of pertinent management reports, including:
    • Prior month and year-to-date financial statement review
    • Monthly budget-to-actual, and variance explanation
    • NOI calculations and asset market value calculations
    • 2-year analysis calculations
    • Industry specific metrics
    • Obtain managers response by 15th of month
    • Due by the fourth Wednesday of every month

  • Lead preparation of annual budgets for all properties, primary and secondary
    • First draft by September 30th
    • Second draft by October 31st
    • Final by November 30th
  • Ensure compliance with quarterly financial covenants and reporting requirements by required due dates for investors, Lenders and Partners.
  • Manage the accounting and finance process
    • Manage relationship with joint venture Partner's.
    • Maintain a task management system which includes a calendar of accounting tasks with accountability and dues dates, updated on the 15th of the first month of every quarter for:
      • Personnel changes
      • Property changes
    • Facilitate bi-weekly L10/one-on-one meetings with all accounting staff to discuss accounting updates.
    • Facilitate a daily huddle with the entire accounting team (as needed).
    • Facilitate a weekly ops meeting/huddle with the entire accounting team.
  • Serve as liaison between Principals & Operations
    • Manage relationship with Regional Manager(s).
    • Visit all sites minimum quarterly.
    • Assist Leadership team with Community Evaluation reports on a quarterly basis.
    • Regional Manage(s) shall have dotted-line reporting responsibility to Controller; hence, all Operations Team Members will have reporting responsibility to Controller.
  • Manage accounting staff by performing regular training and reviews and evaluations:
    • Update and maintain job descriptions for changes in personnel and responsibility on the 15th of the first month of every quarter.
    • Update and maintain key employee metrics monthly on the 15th of the following month.
    • Manage the formal review process by ensuring that all accounting staff receive semi- annual reviews by June 30 and November 15th.
  • Explore alternative insurance providers and perform an annual analysis of each existing insurance provider against three other vendors by October 15th.
  • Manage the tax preparation and planning function by:
    • Ensure all tax returns are prepared and submitted by the due date of the tax returns.
    • Analyze all tax returns at least 5 days before the scheduled filing date.
  • Meet with outside CPA firm by August 15 to discuss tax saving opportunities.


  • Primarily in an office environment.
  • Will be expected to travel as needed, as well as to potential acquires to conduct due diligence.
